Second brain

Keep an Obsidian or plain Markdown notes vault on several computers, with every version saved and an agent that can search and file notes.

Goal: one notes vault, such as an Obsidian vault, on your laptop and your desktop. Each machine picks up the other's changes on its own, every saved version stays in history, and an agent can read, file and restore notes.

Setup

On the machine that has the vault, create a private workspace for it and connect the folder. An owner or admin creates workspaces; on your own organization that's you.

wiele workspace create "Notes"
wiele track notes:/ ~/Notes

Before the first push, keep Obsidian's per-device window state out of Wiele. Otherwise every machine rewrites the same file and the pushes conflict. Create ~/Notes/.wieleignore:

.obsidian/workspace.json
.obsidian/workspace-mobile.json
.trash

Check what will go up, then push:

wiele status --directory ~/Notes
wiele push --directory ~/Notes -m "Import vault"
wiele sync enable --directory ~/Notes

On the second computer, sign in and fetch the vault into a new folder, then open that folder in Obsidian:

wiele fetch notes:/ ~/Notes
wiele sync enable --directory ~/Notes

To keep sync running after a restart, install the background process as a login service on both machines:

wiele daemon install

See Ignore files for the pattern rules.

Folder layout

notes:/
.obsidian/ settings and plugins, shared by both machines
  daily/
    2026-10-07.md
  projects/
  people/
  attachments/
    whiteboard.png

Attachments of any type work, up to 10 GB per file. Storage counts every kept version, so set a retention rule on attachments if you save large files often.

Saving and syncing

Sync pulls the other machine's pushes about every 30 seconds. Uploading is a push:

wiele push --directory ~/Notes -m "Notes from Tuesday"

Automatic uploads with wiele live only run on a copy, never on main, so for a vault you push yourself, or ask your agent to. Push before you switch machines; sync on the other side picks it up within a minute.

If you edit the same note on both machines before pushing, sync on the second one turns off and leaves both versions alone. Run wiele status --directory ~/Notes, then wiele pull --directory ~/Notes --keep-local, merge the recovery copy into your note, push, and enable sync again.

Wiele has no phone app, so Obsidian on a phone can't open the vault through Wiele.

Working with the agent

Start Claude Code, Codex or Cursor in ~/Notes.

"File today's daily note: move the meeting bits into the right project notes and save."

The agent edits the files, then:

wiele status
wiele push -m "File daily note for Oct 7"

"What did I change in my notes this week?"

wiele branch history main
wiele revision diff OLDER NEWER

"What did the pricing note say in August?"

wiele stat notes:/projects/pricing.md
wiele history RESOURCE_ID
wiele read notes:/projects/pricing.md --revision SHA

"I deleted a note about the garden last week. Bring it back."

The agent finds the revision that deleted it with wiele revision show SHA, takes the revision before that, and downloads the old file into the vault:

wiele get notes:/projects/garden.md ./projects/garden.md --revision SHA
wiele push -m "Bring back the garden note"
